For more than a decade, the biotechnology industry has been dominated by recombinant DNA technology, or genetic engineering. The technique involves splicing genes together into useful protein (usually human proteins) producing cells -- such as yeast, bacteria, or mammalian cells in culture -- and then starting to produce large amounts of the protein. In the process of splicing genes into products, a new organism is created. At first, biotech investors and researchers were unsure whether courts would allow them to patent organisms; after all, new organisms that are accidentally discovered and identified in nature are not allowed to patent. However, in 1980 the U.S. Supreme Court resolved the issue by ruling that "living artificial microorganisms are patentable subject matter", a decision that spawned a new wave of biotech companies and a first investment boom in infant industries. In 1982, recombinant insulin became the first product approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) through genetic engineering. Since then, dozens of genetically engineered protein drugs have been commercialized around the world, including recombinant versions of growth hormone, clotting factors, protein-stimulated production of red and white blood cells, interferons, and thrombolytics.
